Colorado residents get in free today to see all the Botanic Gardens has to offer, including Urban Nature, the Gardens' 2008 signature exhibition that explores the intersection of nature and urban culture. State Games of The West Opening Ceremony. 7 p.m., World Arena, 3185 Venetucci Blvd. This kick-off event, which features a ceremonial parade of athletes, sport exhibitions and demonstrations, live entertainment and the lighting of the cauldron by Olympic speedskating gold medalist Derek Parra. $10 adults, $5 youth/seniors. Outside Machinery Day. 10 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Western Museum of Mining and Industry, 225 North Gate Blvd. Tour an operating gold refinery, hear the steam shovel whistle, see a compressed-air locomotive and listen to stories about mining during the industrial revolution during this special event. $8 adults, $7 military, $6 seniors/students, $4 kids 3-12, kids younger than 3 free. 2008 U.S. Senior Open Golf Tournament. Gates open at 6:30 a.m., The Broadmoor Resort, 1 Lake Ave. Catch the opening day of the U.S. Senior Open, which runs July 28-Aug. 3 and features a field of more than 150 professionals and amateurs over the age of 50. $20 for practice rounds, $40-$50 for championship rounds starting July 31, kids younger than 18 free with an adult.
