Very interesting. I watched the video. I find her very encouraging. The more our educators take these kinds of learning styles into consideration the better world we all shall see. Thanks for this post.

It's easy to take pity on a frustrated kid trying to think through a problem and say, "Here, let me help you with that." After all, we're tired and want to go to bed! Often what's needed is saying nothing. And how pressured are kids in school to "g…

This illustrates how subtle things can be with kids. I always told my kids it didn't matter to me so much what grade they got on an assignment, but if they put forth their best effort. Because just what is "smart" anyway?

Thank you! Many teachers will say that they teach because they love to see 'that light come on', that aha! moment when a child GETS it... and I think if they don't pay attention to learning style issues, they miss some of that joy, not to mention st…

It's really good to hear an educator talk the way you do. So many kids drop through the cracks when they have a learning modality that the teacher is not teaching to. They feel stupid and often give up on themselves. In my experience, many of the te…

Rachel Flatt's still doing homework...

There she was, heading out on the ice tonight as the commentators mentioned that after she gets back to her hotel, she'll be working on a report for school due tomorrow. Rachel Flatt, referred to as 'the Rock', skated a beautiful performance in front of the world, and she's still planning on turning in her homework. I wonder how many students have heard that part, and I wonder how many would have the discipline to do that.

I wonder how many have heard about Candian Joannie's mother dyi… Continue

Nurture Shock? How Praising Kids Can Hurt Them?

Well, I wanted to have an entry posted early this morning... and the weather threw me off. You see, a friend and I were scheduled to be in Arvada this morning for the Beyond Giftedness XVII Conference, and we realized when the storm began falling yesterday that we'd better leave immediately then rather than risk a morning commute.

So between the commute north, the conference, and the slow commute home with icy roads yet again, this friend and I had the chance to discuss and ponder key… Continue

Wonderful Words

I watched a child take a test today that measured verbal ability, and was reminded of a very important fact. Without hearing and seeing a word before, it's impossible to use that word and make it one's own, so to speak. Yet much achievement in school rests on a student's ability to gain a larger and larger vocabulary. Sometimes readers will fly through material but never stop to check the pronunciation of a new wor… Continue

A whole new way to publish... Facebook

This week, we made a break-through in writing! As I watched a child complete the initial stages of a writing assignment and become bored with producing a final draft, I asked her if she'd like to publish it online to family members. This intrigued her, so I typed her final draft into a note on Facebook, and sent it as a message to family. Sure enough, grandparents and an aunt in North Carolina were delighted and forwarded her essay to moreContinue

Hi Nikki,
It's a small world... I just came across the website for the Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning a few days ago. I was very excited to hear about the school and that it is located not too far away from my residence. I recently moved my daughter from a gifted magnet program in district 2 (Soaring Eagles) that was a full time gifted class (5 days a week) to district 11 (Columbia Elementary) that only offers 2 - 30 minutes sessions per week. I had my reservations about doing so from the start and now fear that I have made a huge mistake.
I would love to hear more about your charter school.
I look forward to talking more with you.
