This week, we made a break-through in writing! As I watched a child complete the initial stages of a writing assignment and become bored with producing a final draft, I asked her if she'd like to publish it online to family members. This intrigued her, so I typed her final draft into a note on Facebook, and sent it as a message to family. Sure enough, grandparents and an aunt in North Carolina were delighted and forwarded her essay to more family and friends.

We only used her initials, added her copyright date, and made sure the content was appropriate for an unknown audience, but the idea that her work was out there for 'the world' to see has now become a wonderful motivator. I also read recently about a teacher who assigns blog writing to his students to see how much progress they're making towards the underlying concepts of his lessons.

Not only does social media allow connections between people from around the nation and the world, but it can provide a whole new outlet for the production of meaningful writing. We won't, of course, discuss at this time the effects of texting on spelling habits!!
