Personally, I think Valentine's Day is a highly overrated holiday. (So is New Year's Eve, for that matter.) The pressure (especially on guys) to find the perfect expression of feelings is artificially high as a result of an unending stream of jewelry and Hallmark commercials. Now, I like a good Hallmark production as much as the next gal, but let's be realistic. The current state of the economy is not helping us to achieve romantic milestones.

Instead of the same old chocolates (unless they're dark, are they worth the calories?) or flowers (it irks me that stores raise the price of roses the week prior to the 14th), how about a coupon for his/her favorite activity that you normally frown upon? If it's snow sports, give it a try with your loved one. Or, go see his/her type of movie instead of insisting on one you would be sure to like. Let your beloved choose a restaurant for lunch the weekend after the holiday, when crowds won't make you wonder what you were thinking. (Besides, lunches out cost less than dinner, and it can be easier to find a sitter, if needed.) For something that you'll both remember for a long time, volunteer together at a charity that speaks to your hearts.

Instead of a store-bought sentiment that a few thousand others received, write a one-of-a-kind letter or even make a simple valentine. You can even personalize templates available on the Internet at little or no cost. Step out of your comfort zone and tell him/her what you admire and respect the most - his/her patience, sense of humor, way with children...you get the idea. Score extra points by incorporating a photo of the two of you. Either read your note aloud, or print it on pretty paper (bonus: frame it).

Whatever you do, don't forget to acknowledge the 14th (yes, Valentine's Day is always on the 14th) by showing your love what they mean to you - in any way you choose.
