Pikes Peak Urban Gardens offers kids summer gardening classes

It won't be long and the Colorado Springs landscape will change from brown to green. Pikes Peak Urban Gardens plans to help with this transformation by offering gardening classes for kids.
Classes begin in May and continue through July. topics include garden art, basic gardening, an introduction to mints and hyperturfa planters.

Recycled Garden Art for Kids - Session 1: May 2, 1 - 2:30 p.m. Session 2: All children will be asked to return for session 2 to cast the final molds on May 9 at 1 - 2:30 p.m. Ages 5-12. Cost-$10 (includes both sessions) Children are invited to help us construct beautiful handmade mosaic stepping stones for the Harlan Wolfe children’s garden pathways. Students will be asked to bring old colorful chipped or cracked dishes and colorful glass bottles with them. They will build their mosaic designs using the colorful item brought. Class takes place over the course of 2 sessions. They will be able to come "visit" their stones and see the garden grow and change throughout the season.(Limited to 25 participants) Taught by Sherry Bennett.

Kids Gardening 101- June 12, 10 -1 1:30 a.m. Ages 5-12 Cost: $15. Beginner class teaches kids about seeds, and the miracles they contain. Children will tour the garden, tasting yummy plants, assist in planting seeds and create a take home starter. Limited to 15 participants. Taught by Cindy West,Colorado Certified Gardener.

Amazing Mints - June 26 10 - 11:30 a.m. Ages 6 - 12. Cost $15 (includes take home plants). In this class, kids will learn about the history of mint use, how to identify plants and how to grow this easy herb. They will also make a mint tea and taste a fruit and mint sorbet. Limited to 15 participants. Taught by Sandra Knauf.

Hyperturfa Planters ( planter that resembles natural turfa stone) Session 1: July 21 , 1 - 2:30 p.m. Session 2: July 28, 1 - 2:30 p.m. Ages 6-14. Cost $15. First session: Students will incorporate peat moss in a mixture of sand, cement and mold the material in old plastic pots and wrap in recycled plastic shopping bags. These will need to be left undisturbed for several days. Second session: The mixture will be hard enough for students to fine-tune the shape with a wire brush or improvised carving tools. Students will be taking these home to plant in.(limited to 20 participants)Taught by Sherry Bennett.
